Your historic home can be expertly transformed to enhance your lifestyle today and express your personality while also carefully honoring and amplifying its essential character. Unlike today’s more open spaces, historical homes are often quite smaller than the modern norm and homeowners yearn for more expansive space. Designing an addition or whole home remodel for your historic home requires dedication, commitment, and knowledge. Here are some examples of historic design build projects for inspiration:

Architectural Expertise
The historical registry designation of the home shown above required exacting attention to detail in the architectural planning of this extensive whole home remodel. The front part of the home had to be preserved when additional space was added. The new space could not exactly match the existing historical structure; the delineation needed to be evident. The additional space could not dominate the existing structure in mass or height.

Blending Old and New
This kitchen in a historical home in the Kensington District of San Diego was lacking in functionality and space. The clients wanted to significantly transform their kitchen while honoring the character of their home. The new design starts with a bold black hood above a large white peninsula as a focal point. The black and white theme is repeated throughout the room, particularly in the concrete backsplash. The kitchen is now open to the dining room and family room after the removal of two walls. The classic design blends hints of European charm with a modern sensibility and retains its sense of place in historic surroundings.

Mid Century Magnificence
This kitchen remodel is in a La Jolla Farms home designed in the 1960s by noted architect Dale Naegle. The home needed significant updating to accommodate a young, growing family. In honor of their passion for the home’s mid-century modern origins, the clients wanted a kitchen influenced by that time period with a contemporary attitude and modern conveniences. The kitchen is now double the size of the original after borrowing space from a bedroom. The new design respects the home’s original character while providing a functional hub for their family.

Investing in a proven design build process assures a home tailored to your needs and style today while also following historical guidelines.
